What is Kosong Studio?

Kosong Studio is an independent creative and multimedia design studio based in Kuching, Malaysia. It was born out of a desire to create work that is intentional, thoughtful, and adaptable. From branding to motion, from editorial layouts to web experiences, every project is approached with care, clarity, and purpose.

The studio explores ideas across visual mediums, bringing together motion, sound, and design into cohesive experiences that communicate clearly and leave room for meaning. Kosong Studio does not chase trends or flashy effects. Instead, it focuses on work that feels honest, enduring, and reflective of the story it represents.

The Ethos of Kosong Studio

‘Kosong’ means “empty” or “nothing” in Malay. The name reflects the studio’s beginnings, which started with practically nothing: just a beat-up laptop, a rented room, and a handful of pirated software.

This idea of “starting from nothing” became a guiding philosophy. Kosong Studio embraces adaptability, minimalism, and space, valuing clarity over clutter, intention over decoration, and visual systems that leave room for meaning. The studio does not strictly adhere to a single style but always maintains a clear identity.

The brain behind Kosong Studio

The studio is led by Akmal Ghazali, a Kuching-based Malaysian indie creative working across graphic design, motion, animation, and digital storytelling.

From indie projects to selective commercial campaigns, Akmal honed his approach through years of direct, hands-on work and collaborations. Along the way, Malaysia's indie music and underground scenes left their mark. They fueled a preference for raw, intentional visuals. Every project begins on a blank slate, refined through focused iteration until it lands with clarity and real impact. No layers or intermediaries in between.

Kosong Studio reflects that mindset. Independent. Intentional.
