Stereo Superman started as a solo project of Akmal Ghazali, with his previous band, Afternoon Mute taking a hiatus after every member was graduating from college. With still lots of song in his collection (initially wrote for Afternoon Mute) , Akmal decided not to put all those songs to waste and started recording in his home bedroom and posting it up online using the alias Stereo Superman. That resulted in Stereo Superman's debut EP, The Art of Letting Go which was released online in 2012.

Stereo Superman released a bunch of singles between 2012 - 2014 most notably Memories and Kembali (in Sarawakian local dialect) in 2013, and a cover of Echosmith's Cool Kids in 2014 among other releases.

In 2017, Stereo Superman celebrated it's 5th anniversary with the hashtag #5TahunJagung (a play on words of "setahun jagung", a Malay proverbs meaning immature) and a release of new single "Dear Asha" which was featured in Spotify.
